This article will explore today\u2019s editorial points, along with practice questions and key vocabulary.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>PM Urges Iran to Ensure Peace and Freedom of Navigation<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>In the first high-level meeting between India and Iran since the war in Iran began in February, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Monday in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on the sidelines of the SCO summit.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi urged President Pezeshkian to help maintain peace and stability in West Asia and ensure that ships and other vessels can move freely through the Strait of Hormuz.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>President Pezeshkian blamed Israel and the United States for the conflict and asked Prime Minister Modi to use India\u2019s \u201cextensive contacts with various parties\u201d to help move forward the process of dialogue.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>After the meeting, Prime Minister Modi said on X that India and Iran were still committed to strengthening their long-standing friendship in different areas.<\/li>\n<li><strong> Modi said that India wanted to increase and expand the range of goods and products traded with Iran in the coming years.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The two leaders also discussed the current situation in the region, and Mr. Modi said that India would continue to support all efforts that could help bring lasting peace.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Ministry of External Affairs said that Prime Minister Modi also called for the freedom of navigation and free movement of trade and commerce.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong> Modi stressed that civilians and civilian infrastructure, including commercial ships and seafarers, should not be harmed under any circumstances.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Prime Minister Modi also said that he was looking forward to welcoming President Pezeshkian to India for the upcoming BRICS summit.<\/li>\n<li><strong>President Pezeshkian said that Iran had a \u201cresponsibility\u201d to protect the Iranian people from \u201cdanger and insecurity\u201d and to create the conditions needed for them to live in peace, tranquillity and security.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>He said that Iran was concentrating on maintaining peace and security and solving problems through dialogue and negotiations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>President Pezeshkian blamed Israel and the U.S. for putting \u201crestrictions and obstacles\u201d in Iran\u2019s way.<\/strong> He said that, despite the pressure and restrictions being imposed to stop Iran from maintaining relations with other countries, Tehran was ready to increase its cooperation with India.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Referring to the talks with the U.S. about a ceasefire, Mr. Pezeshkian said that the Islamic Republic of Iran had continued to follow the commitments it had made under the agreements.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>However, he said that the American side had unfortunately failed to fulfil its own commitments.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In June, President Pezeshkian had invited Prime Minister Modi to attend the funeral of Iran\u2019s slain Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, which was held in July.<\/li>\n<li>India was represented at the funeral by a team that included the Governor of Bihar, Lt. Gen. Syed Ata Hasnain (retd.).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>CM Vijay Announces New Supercritical Thermal Power Station in Thoothukudi<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Monday announced the Tamil Nadu Transmission Improvement Scheme at a cost of \u20b933,066 crore. The scheme will help strengthen the power transmission system and improve the supply of electricity to the major centres where electricity is used in large amounts.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>He also announced that a new supercritical thermal power station would be set up in Thoothukudi at a cost of \u20b920,800 crore<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Along with this, he announced a \u20b91,762-crore project to improve the power distribution system in Chennai<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>While making a suo motu statement in the Assembly, Mr. Vijay said that the Transmission Improvement Scheme would include the construction of 196 new substations and transmission lines covering 15,000 km.<\/li>\n<li>The existing transmission lines would also be strengthened under the scheme so that the power transmission system could work better.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Chief Minister said that no steps had been taken in the last five years to attract investments in thermal and hydel power stations. He added that the capacity of the Thoothukudi Thermal Power Station would now be increased.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>At present, the Thoothukudi Thermal Power Station has five thermal power units. Each unit has a capacity of 210 MW, making the station\u2019s total installed capacity 1,050 MW.<\/li>\n<li><strong> Vijay said that the existing 210-MW units would be replaced under the public-private partnership (PPP) model<\/strong>. They would be replaced by two new units, each having a capacity of 800 MW.<\/li>\n<li><strong>With these two new 800-MW units, the total capacity of the Thoothukudi Thermal Power Station would increase to 1,600 MW.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>He also said that Chennai\u2019s power distribution infrastructure would be improved at a cost of \u20b91,762 crore.<\/strong> This was necessary because power supply gets disrupted during the monsoon, while there is also a substantial increase in the demand for electricity during summer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>SC Collegium Selects New Chief Justice for Rajasthan High Court<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>On Monday, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended Justice Sanjay K. Agrawal, who is a judge of the Chhattisgarh High Court, for appointment as the Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The recommendation was made by the Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, a weekend after media reports brought to light letters written by serving Supreme Court judge Justice Sandeep Mehta about the conduct of Rajasthan Acting Chief Justice S.P. Sharma.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>In three letters written during August, Justice Mehta accused Justice Sharma of \u201cfavouritism\u201d and misconduct<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Justice S.P. Sharma had been working as the Acting Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court for the last 10 months.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chief Justice Surya Kant had said in a press statement that the Collegium would look into the allegations made by Justice Mehta through an institutional mechanism.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The Collegium has also recommended new Chief Justices for two other High Courts \u2014 the Madhya Pradesh High Court and the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In a separate resolution, the Collegium recommended that Justice Sanjay K.
