The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said that these attacks were a direct response to Iran\u2019s attacks on American warships that were enforcing a naval blockade on Iranian ports.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>On Tuesday night, CENTCOM said that U.S. forces had destroyed five Iranian crude-oil carriers. <\/strong>This happened after the IRGC had targeted a U.S. Navy warship with ballistic missiles twice during the previous two days.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Iran\u2019s attacks on U.S. warships are being seen as a risky attempt to break the naval blockade. The blockade has largely stopped Iran from exporting or sending its oil through the Gulf waters.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>CENTCOM said that, in response to Iran\u2019s latest unsuccessful attacks, U.S. forces destroyed the Iranian oil carriers M\/T Kaviz, M\/T Charminar, M\/T Horizon 1 and M\/T Riesco in the Gulf of Oman. It also destroyed M\/T Derya near Kharg Island.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Before attacking the ships, American forces ordered the crews to leave the vessels. After the attacks, the ships were damaged so badly that they could no longer operate.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The IRGC, however, gave a different statement. It said that its forces continued to have \u201cfull control\u201d of the Strait of Hormuz.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The war that was started by the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28 has gone through different stages of increased fighting and short periods of reduced fighting during the past six months. <strong>In the latest stage of the war, both sides have increasingly started targeting oil tankers, creating a new area of fighting at sea.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The price of Brent crude oil went above $100 per barrel on Wednesday. This was the first time it had crossed the $100 mark since July 2024.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>On September 5, CENTCOM had announced that it had destroyed three Iranian tankers. This came after the IRGC launched missiles at a U.S. aircraft carrier and a U.S. guided-missile destroyer.<\/li>\n<li><strong>On Tuesday, the IRGC claimed that it had hit two U.S. Navy destroyers that were operating near the Strait of Hormuz. However, CENTCOM said on Wednesday that no U.S. Navy warship had actually been hit.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>CENTCOM claimed that all the IRGC\u2019s attempted attacks had failed. It also said that U.S. forces had successfully destroyed 10 Iranian tankers in just one week.<\/strong> According to CENTCOM, these ships were part of a multibillion-dollar secret network used to provide money to the IRGC, and Iran was unable to protect these vessels.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The IRGC Navy gave a different account. It said that, in response to the aggressive and hostile actions of the U.S. military, including the American attack on five Iranian oil tankers in the Persian Gulf, it had targeted two U.S. vessels and eight oil tankers in the area and caused them heavy damage.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The IRGC also said that 10 ships trying to pass through an area of the Strait of Hormuz that it considered \u201cprohibited and unsafe\u201d were targeted.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The IRGC said that the Strait of Hormuz remained firmly under the watch and control of the IRGC Navy. It described its navy as capable and brave.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday night that he believed the war would end \u201cimmediately\u201d after the U.S. midterm elections in November.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Trump told journalists that he believed the war would end immediately after the election because Iran \u201ccannot hold out any longer.\u201d He also accused Iran of being \u201cdesperate to try and affect\u201d the U.S. election.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Trump also said that the oil prices, which had increased sharply because of the war with Iran, would probably not come down until after the U.S. midterm elections.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>Government Opposes Treating English as a \u2018Native\u2019 Language<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Union government told the Supreme Court on Wednesday that it has a problem with treating English as an indigenous language. However, it assured the court that it would quickly hold discussions on giving the present Class 6 students a one-time relief from the compulsory third-language paper in the CBSE Class 10 examination.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The case was heard by a Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant. Solicitor-General Tushar Mehta, who appeared in place of Additional Solicitor-General Aishwarya Bhati and represented the Centre and the CBSE, said that a meeting with the concerned officials would be held \u201ctoday or tomorrow\u201d in the presence of Ms. Bhati. The purpose of the meeting would be to take a decision on giving relief to the current Class 6 students.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, who appeared for the petitioners, asked the court to pass an order on the issue of moving English to the \u201cnon-native\u201d or foreign-language category.<\/li>\n<li>In reply, Solicitor-General Tushar Mehta said, \u201cWe have an issue about that. We would like to make submissions on that.\u201d He asked the court for a short postponement because Additional Solicitor-General Aishwarya Bhati could not appear before the court that day due to a personal difficulty.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Supreme Court postponed the hearing to September 17. Senior advocate Anand Grover, who was also appearing for the petitioners, said that parents were becoming worried and requested the court not to allow any more postponements in the case.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>At the same time, the Supreme Court issued notice to the government on petitions filed by minority schools regarding the implementation of the three-language scheme.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In an earlier hearing, the Supreme Court had asked the CBSE to consider giving Class 6 students relief from appearing for the third-language examination in Class 10.<\/li>\n<li><strong>According to the CBSE guidelines, students of Classes 7 to 9 are exempted from the third-language examination. However, the current Class 6 students were to face the complete implementation of the three-language scheme. This would include a compulsory Class 10 Board examination in the third language by 2031.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Justice Bagchi said that some time should be given not only to the students but also to the education infrastructure, so that the infrastructure in the different education boards could become equal or reach the required level.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Justice Bagchi said that it was a good policy to first teach children their mother tongue, then an indigenous language, and after that another indigenous or foreign language. However, he said that this should be started when children are a little younger and are studying in a lower class, so that they get enough time to adjust and learn the languages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>MHA Proposes New \u2018Chapter K\u2019 Under Article 371 for Ladakh<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has proposed an elected body for the Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh. For this, it has proposed adding a new provision to the Constitution under Article 371, through a new Chapter K. Civil society members who attended a meeting with MHA officials in Delhi on Wednesday gave this information.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Cherring Dorjay Lakruk of the Leh Apex Body (LAB) said that they were \u201cdisappointed\u201d because the meeting was almost the same as the earlier meeting held on May 22.<\/strong> On Wednesday, the MHA officials showed them a PowerPoint presentation about Chapter K, but they had still not been given a detailed \u201cdraft proposal\u201d by the MHA.<\/li>\n<li><strong>In a statement, the civil society members said that the MHA explained that the proposed UT-level body would be directly elected by the people. It would also have the power to make laws on matters related to land, culture and language, forests, environment and natural resources. It would also deal with any other subjects that are kept under the UT according to Article 240.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Ladakh Chief Secretary Ashish Kundra, who was present at the meeting, said in a post on X that he attended the sub-committee meeting with Ladakh leaders at the MHA in Delhi.<\/strong> He said that there was a generally positive feeling in the meeting as they discussed the main features of a special type of governance system under Article 371. He also said that the aim was to make democracy stronger and give people a greater role in governance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Representatives of the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) asked the MHA to make sure that the Lieutenant-Governor of Ladakh does not take any major decisions about administration, government officials or land until the proposed constitutional safeguards are put in place<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The LAB and KDA also asked the government to make sure that the proposed law is passed in the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The civil society members also asked for compensation for the families of the people who were killed in the violence that took place in Leh city on September 24, 2025. During this violence, four people were killed in police firing.<\/li>\n<li>They also demanded that the government withdraw the criminal cases against 80 people. They referred to the protection given to people who took part in the \u201cGen Z protest\u201d at Delhi\u2019s Jantar Mantar in July.<\/li>\n<li>The violence in Ladakh took place during a protest that had been organised to demand constitutional safeguards for Ladakh.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Article 371 currently has chapters from A to J. It deals with \u201cTemporary, Transitional and Special Provisions\u201d and is included in Part XXI of the Constitution.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Article 371 currently applies to 12 States: Nagaland, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Sikkim and Karnataka.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Ladakh lost its special status under Article 370 of the Constitution when the former State of Jammu and Kashmir was reorganised in 2019. After this, Ladakh was made a Union Territory without a legislative assembly.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Since then, the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) have been demanding Statehood and tribal status for Ladakh. They have also been asking for a bigger role for local people in decisions related to land and infrastructure projects.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was also part of the group that met MHA officials, said that the meeting could not be called a complete success.<\/strong> The group had expected to receive a draft proposal that would promise constitutional protection for Ladakh under Article 371, but the MHA did not provide such a draft.<\/li>\n<li>Sonam Wangchuk also said that the group had asked the government to withdraw the cases filed against
