But there is a fundamental limitation:<\/span><\/p>\n Walk through almost any factory and you\u2019ll find valuable knowledge that never enters a database. An experienced operator hears a machine beginning to sound different. A maintenance technician recognizes a failure pattern. A supervisor sees that today\u2019s schedule will create trouble downstream.<\/span><\/p>\n That knowledge is real. But if it remains in someone\u2019s head, on a clipboard, or on a whiteboard, AI can\u2019t use it.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n One of Lean\u2019s most important principles is simple: <\/span>go and see.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n AI doesn\u2019t make Gemba obsolete. It makes it more important.<\/span><\/p>\n There is a danger that increasingly sophisticated technology makes staying in the conference room comfortable. Why walk the process when a dashboard can tell us what\u2019s happening?<\/span><\/p>\n Because the data isn\u2019t the process.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n The dashboard only knows what was captured.<\/span><\/p>\n This creates an important opportunity: combine the judgment of people closest to the work with technology that captures their observations at the point of work. I think of the relationship this way:<\/span><\/p>\n Gemba creates the observation.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n People provide context and judgment.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Digital tools capture the knowledge.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n AI helps identify patterns and accelerate learning.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Lean practitioners should also remember something important: technology can automate waste just as easily as it can eliminate it.<\/span><\/p>\n Before digitizing a process, ask whether the process should exist in its current form.<\/span><\/p>\n Before automating a 30-question inspection, ask whether all 30 questions add value.<\/span><\/p>\n Before feeding data into AI, ask whether anyone trusts the data today.<\/span><\/p>\n That\u2019s Lean thinking.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n AI can dramatically accelerate <\/span>Plan-Do-Check-Act<\/span><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n Imagine a problem-solving team analyzing years of quality records, maintenance history, supplier information, process parameters and previous corrective actions in minutes instead of days.<\/span><\/p>\n AI can help develop better hypotheses faster.<\/span><\/p>\n But someone still has to go to Gemba, understand what is actually happening, test the hypothesis, and determine whether the countermeasure worked.<\/span><\/p>\n AI doesn\u2019t replace PDCA. It changes its tempo.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n That may ultimately be AI\u2019s greatest contribution to Lean.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n For decades we\u2019ve focused on reducing production lead time. Perhaps we should now focus on another measure:<\/span><\/p>\n Learning lead time.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n How quickly can we move from:<\/span><\/p>\n Problem \u2192 Observation \u2192 Insight \u2192 Experiment \u2192 Learning \u2192 Improvement?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Lean builds the discipline.
